SCHOOLS & YOUNG PEOPLE

Age Groups & Curriculum Links

There is no set level of academic achievement required by students to attend Poppy Travel Tours for Schools and Young People - information, activities and discussion can all be adapted to address the needs, levels and abilities of everyone.

KEY STAGE 2 - PRIMARY SCHOOLS

The one day tours in the UK are all suitable for Key Stage 2. They meet the requirement in Citizenship of learning about Remembrance and support the History, English and Art and Design curriculas.

KEY STAGE 3 (11-14 Years of Age)

Poppy Travel tours support the current Key Stage 3 curriculum in the following areas.

HISTORY

Tours support the History Curriculum skill requirements of:

The subject content of the tours will support studies of the First and Second World Wars, the Holocaust and the Cold War.

CITIZENSHIP

A tour can support the Citizenship Curriculum requirements for students to:

It can also raise questions about citizenship, patriotism, inclusion and diversity. The history of Commonwealth and Empire troops' contribution to both World Wars provides an important entry to exploring the racial and ethnically mixed communities we live in today. The experiences of men such as Walter Tull will be explored alongside those of Isaac Rosenberg and Rupert Brooke.

These tours can also raise issues about war and peace, resolving conflict, international co-operation and the role of organisations such as the EU and the UN.

There are also opportunities for cross-curricular themes and activities to support English, Geography and Religious Education – all of which can be developed further at the request of the teacher.

Poppy Travel Tours for Schools and Young People support the recent Key Stage 3 aim of improving cross-curricular activities. The activities we use and the discussions that we encourage support the overall aims to create 'responsible citizens and successful learners'.

KEY STAGE 4 - YEARS 10 AND 11 (15-16 Years of Age)

GCSE

The tours will draw out the same skills as at Key Stage 3 with additional emphasis on student preparation for the trip to carry out their own investigations.

Other aspects of the trip can be drawn out after consultation and according to students' studies such as the First and Second World Wars, the Holocaust and the Cold War.

Information about your exam board will help us to prepare or draw out specific elements within your tour.

In particular the tours support the Humanities. All of the tours contain cross curricular information and skills development. They are therefore ideally suited as an opportunity to address a number of subject areas together. These include:

NB: We are developing tours specifically for Geography and will publish details on this site when ready.

POST 16 AGE GROUP

Poppy Travel for Schools and Young People can be adapted to suit many aspects of the post-16 curriculum, either as a standard historical tour that examines the issues in greater depth for A Level History students or as Topic led Trips such as Poetry and Conflict; exploring Peace settlements; regeneration after conflict; or War Crimes and War Crimes trials.
