Italy is a fascinating and dramatic place to study the Second World War.

The story of the Italian front is steeped in controversy, and there is still debate about the conduct of the Allied battles, from the Salerno Landings in September 1943, to the Liberation of Rome, especially around Anzio.

Monte Cassino and other ridge top positions give a sense of the drama and power of the battles. Troops from all over the world fought here – British, Americans, French, Polish, New Zealanders, and even Hawaiian Japanese – and the many battlefields, memorials and cemeteries provide evidence and atmosphere in abundance for the historian.

"Not a day has gone by since we returned from
Italy, without a pupil who went on the tour catching
me at the end of a lesson or stopping me in the corridor to speak to me about what they learned, a daily reminder of the fabulous time we had."
Seb Neal, Head of History, King's School Chester
