Our Guide Team

Each tour is accompanied by an experienced tour manager – it is their job to take care of tour administration and provide historical background and local knowledge.

Here we introduce some of our Tour Managers.  Remembrance (R) Battlefield (B)

PIERS STORIE-PUGH OBE (R)

Piers Storie-PughSince setting up Remembrance Travel for The Royal British Legion in 1985, Piers has personally guided more than 400 tours worldwide. Piers is one of the few worldwide generalist guides and is a Guild of Battlefield Guides badged guide. Heis recognised as possbly the foremost expert on overseas war cemeterie and memorials.

He served in the Regular Army and the Territorial Army for over 30 years., commanding a number of regiments. Piers was awarded the MBE in 1987 for services to the Army and an OBE in 2009 for his services to The Royal British Legion.
 

PATRICK GALE (R)

Patrick has taken tours to Germany, Austria and Poland for a number of years, both before and after the unification of Germany and the collapse of the Iron Curtain. He holds a BA in German from Bristol and has a wide knowledge of central European history. His specialist tour knowledge covers Auschwitz, Colditz Castle, Berlin and Warsaw, and he is also Treasurer of the Colditz Society.

MIKE BRADLEY (R)

Mike Bradley is a retired Army officer who has given 41 years service in the Army. He has travelled the world and lived in many interesting places such as Singapore, Libya, and Belize. His main interest is in World War II military history, particularly Normandy, the Far East and North Africa. Mike deeply enjoys the company of all the interesting people that he joins on tours with the Legion.

MIKE CARTWRIGHT (R)

Mike Cartwright is a retired army officer who has worked for The Royal British Legion and other forces' charities for over ten years. During his army service he travelled extensively in Europe, the Middle East and Far East and was on the staff of the British Embassy in Seoul, Republic of Korea. He has many years' experience as a tour manager with parties of veterans.

INGLEBY JEFFERSON (R)

Ingleby Jefferson is a retired army officer who served in Italy for seven years altogether, including three years as a military attaché in the British Embassy in Rome. He escorts many of our tours to Italy and speaks fluent Italian and has extensive knowledge Italy and of the Italian Campaign.

THE DOCTOR

Each Pilgrimage is accompanied by medical staff, usually a doctor but sometimes a nurse, who provide medical and psychological support to the pilgrims. These medical volunteers are usually from military backgrounds, either Regular or Reserve.

Colonel John Richardson L/RAMC(V) is the Honorary Medical Adviser and selects the medical support for tours. He served for 35 years in the Regular Army and for a further 10 years in the Territorial Army. He has accompanied one or more pilgrimages each year for the past 16 years and occasionally acts as tour manager.

THE NATIONAL CHAIRMAN'S REPRESENTATIVE

The Royal British Legion is the custodian of National Remembrance. Each pilgrimage is led by a representative personally appointed by the Legion's National Chairman of The Royal British Legion. The current Chairman, Peter Cleminson, has personally led pilgrimages to Europe and the Far East. These representatives are on hand to help and support you, and acknowledge the sacrifice made by leading the acts of homage.

THE STANDARD BEARER

Each pilgrimage is accompanied by a Standard Bearer, who, in most cases, have competed at National level. These Standards have been consecrated formally in a church and are a visible symbol of the Legion, providing a focal point for paying respects at the graves and memorials. The current National Standard Bearer of The Royal British Legion is Julia Poulter and the National Standard Bearer of The Women’s Section is Laura Ashton. Both are prominent at the Festival of Remembrance and have accompanied a number of pilgrimages in recent years.

COLONEL CHRISTOPHER NEWBOULD CBE (B)

Colonel Christopher Newbould CBEChristopher established teh 'Remember Them' Battlefield Tours in 1997 and has been an integral part of our programme ever since. His interest in battlefields began at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where he was awarded the Military History prize in 1961. Since then, during a Regular Army career of nearly 40 years with The Gloucestershire Regiment, he has toured battlefields worldwide, interspersed with operational experience in Borneo and Northern Ireland. 

He is a founder member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides and was among the first to qualify for the Guild’s prestigious guide badge. He is currently Chief Validator of the Guild of Battlefield Guides and the Chief Battlefield Guide for Poppy Travel.
 
 

MAJOR FRANK BALDWIN (B)

Major Frank BaldwinFrank Baldwin has been a battlefield tour enthusiast for many years, and has led tours all over Europe. He is a trustee of the Battlefields Trust and is currently a badged guide and Education Officer of the Guild of Battlefield Guides. Frank served 10 years in the Royal Artillery.
 
 

 

MAJOR BOB DARBY (B)

Major Bob DarbyBob Darby is a badged guide of the Guild of Battlefield Guides. He served in the Parachute Regiment and is a veteran of the 1982 Falklands campaign where he fought as a member of the 3rd Battalion of his Regiment. He has returned to the Falklands several times since the war to visit his many friends in the islands, and led our highly successful 25th anniversary battlefield tour.

 

 

LIEUTENANT COLONEL ANTHONY LANGDON (B)

A retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Marines, he saw operational service in the Middle East, Oman and Northern Ireland. He is a specialist on the Italian Front having spent several years in Italy. Anthony is also a cultural guide with specialist knowledge of church architecture. He is a member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides.

CHRIS SCOTT (B)

Chris ScottChris Scott is a Marlborough enthusiast, a badged member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides and former Head of Education of the Royal Armouries at HM Tower of London. His thorough investigation of the ground where Marlborough’s men fought their great battles is the basis of our Malplaquet tour. His jovial manner and robust delivery make him the ideal guide to help us understand a largely forgotten period of Britain’s military history.

 

 

In addition we have 30 expert battlefield guides, all with operational military experience. All our guides are graduates of our "Realities of War" programme for Regular Army recruits, that we have operated since 2000 and several of our tours this year will be led by seasoned members of this talented team.
