WWI records available on Ancestry.co.uk

ancestry.co.ukApproximately five million British soldiers fought in the First World War, in the army, navy and for the first time, the air. Around 800,000 never returned home.

These names and the stories behind them are recorded and preserved forever on Ancestry.co.uk in the WWI military record collections.

Made up of three major record collections; the medal index card rolls, pension and service records, they contain over eight million names*.  Also included are smaller collections such as the Royal Naval Division casualty lists and the Royal Aero Club license cards.

These records on Ancestry.co.uk provide vital details for family history researchers, military enthusiasts or just family members wishing to learn more about their ancestors’ who bravely fought in the First World War.

Soldiers in World War I - courtesy of IWMMedal rolls

The most comprehensive collection of British WWI military personnel – after millions of service and pension records were destroyed in the bombings of WWII. The medal rolls include all soldiers that entered a theatre of war between 1914 and 1922, detailing where and when they served, as well as their commendations.

Service records

The British Army service records describe the careers of soldiers who completed their service, were killed in action, executed or died - with full details of their service and, where recorded, details of their death.

Pension records

The pension records, which relate to soldiers discharged on account of sickness or injuries sustained during the War, include the medical records relating to the disability for which pensions were granted.

* Once service and medal roll records are fully complete (by late 2008). Many names appear on multiple records.
