Preserved trenches on the Somme

Code B1FR02

Few conflicts illuminate the horrors and bravery of war more than the Battle of the Somme in Picardy. The 'Big Push' began with such optimism on 1 July 1916 as it sought to break through the German frontline, but ended in costly disappointment.

Nine months later, the lessons of the Somme were applied at Vimy Ridge. Here the Canadian Corps achieved remarkable success on Easter Monday 9 April 1917.

This short, inexpensive tour covers the highlights and will suit those with limited time and budget.

Highlights include:
  • Visit the sites of July 1916 attacks at Gommecourt, Beaumont, Thiepval and La Boiselle
  • See the poignant front line at Newfoundland Memorial Park
  • Discover the mining and tunnelling operations at the crater of Lochnagar
  • Visit Lutyen's imposing Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval
  • See where Britain's battlefield tanks made their debut
  • Visit the preserved trenches and the striking Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge
