At Ypres, the Remembrance experience is very evident. It is here that the Allies held the Germans at bay until the end of the Great War.

Ypres also witnessed the first use of poison gas and the horrific battle of Passchendaele.

The Last Post ceremony, held at 8pm every night at the Menin Gate, never fails to move anyone of any age. This most famous memorial records the names of 54,866 missing from the British Commonwealth.

Here, reborn from the ashes of war, is one of Europe's prettiest towns.

Highlights include:

  • Crossing the infamous Ypres Salient, a main battlefield surrounded by the enemy on three sides
  • Walk the preserved battlefiled and see bunkers and memorials at Hill 60
  • Visit Essex Farm, where the Canadian surgeon John Macrae wrote the poem 'In Flanders' Fields'
  • See the preserved trenches in Sanctuary Wood, discover what trench warfare was really like
  • Learn about the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
  • Visit Tyne Cot War Cemetery on Passchendaele Ridge, the largest Commonwealth War Cemetery in the world where most of the soldiers buried are unknown
  • Attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate
