Today Walcheren Island is a friendly holiday destination at the mouth of the Scheldt Estuary. Sixty-five years ago it was anything but. In late September 1944, Walcheren was said to be the most fortified place on earth and on this tour we relive the dramatic atmosphere of November 1944.

We follow in the footsteps of British Commandos and the 52nd Lowland Division as they cleared the island of any German opposition. Success was crucial in gaining control of the Belgian port of Antwerp as an Allied supply depot in order to continue the advance through the Low Countries en route to Berlin.

Highlights include:
  • At 'Flushing' (Vlissingen) see 'Uncle' Beach where the Commandos and the Scots landed and see the German defences.
  • Follow the astounding exploits of Royal Marine Commandos at Westkappelle
  • Trace the fighting inland and hear stories of Walcheren Island's liberation
  • Visit Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery where those who died in Operation Infatuate are buried
  • Visit the grave of Guy Gibson VC, hero of the Dambusters, in nearby Steenbergen
