Malta played a pivotal role in World War II as the only British-held harbour between Gibraltar and Alexandria. It was crucial in supplying the naval convoys which reinforced the Allies in the Western Desert.

Besieged from 1940 until the Axis surrender in North Africa in May 1943, Malta survived thanks to the fighter squadrons based on the island and the convoys that ran the gauntlet.

From March to April 1942, Malta absorbed twice the tonnage of bombs dropped on London during the Blitz: 1,493 citizens were killed and 3,784 wounded.

In 1942, King George VI awarded the island the George Cross - Britain's highest civilian award for bravery.

Highlights include:
  • Tour of Valletta including the historical Malta Experience exhibition, visit the once secret Lascaris War Rooms and the War Museum in St Elmo's Fort

  • Visit Ta'qali, a key RAF airstrip in the defence of Malta and Mtarfa War Cemetery
  • Day tour to the neighbouring island of Gozo with its baroque churches and old stone farmhouses
