The controversial 1944 Allied landings on the French Riviera were to coincide with the 6 June Normandy invasion. Churchill opposed the idea of taking troops from Italy where he thought the British were on the brink of a breakthrough that would forestall the Soviets in the Balkans.

But American pressure prevailed and the landings went ahead on 15 August. It involved 300,000 men, 1,000 ships and a 10,000-strong airborne force, including a British brigade, spearheading the assault. The object was to seize the vital ports of Marseilles and Toulon, liberate the southern two-thirds of France and link up with the Allied armies in Northern France.

Highlights include:
  • Cap Negre: scaled by French commandos who destroyed a German gun position to protect the flank of the Allied landings
  • Le Muy/La Motte area where British and US airborne troops landed 12 miles inland to secure the main exit route from the landing beaches
  • Visit the American Cemetery at Draguignan. Depending on demand, a visit to Mazargues War Cemetery Marseilles, where British casualties are buried, may be possible
  • Walk the landing beaches near St Tropez and St Raphael, now famous Cote d'Azur resorts
