Tour Code B2FR03

Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten believed that the Battle of Normandy was won on the beaches of Dieppe, yet the Dieppe raid remains Canada's most controversial action of World War II.

Was it necessary? Was it worth the sacrifice? We address these questions and discover what happened on 19 August 1942.

The aim was to destroy Dieppe's defences and raid the German HQ. The largely Canadian military force undertook the main assault with more than 250 naval vessels and 69 air squadrons providing support.

Failure resulted in nearly 4,000 casualties, the loss of 106 aircraft and many landing craft, whilst the Luftwaffe that bombarded the beachhead lost only 48 of its 945 planes.

Highlights include:
  • Follow in the footsteps of the commandos who attacked on the flanks of the Dieppe Raid
  • See where three Victoria Crosses were won
  • Walk on the tragic, shingle Canadian landing beaches
  • Visit Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery where many victims of the raid are buried
  • Attend anniversary commemoration ceremonies
